Copyright
Barker, James Nelson (1784–1858), American dramatist, author of the first American play on an Indian theme,
The Indian Princess; or,
La BelleSauvage (1808), which was also the first play from America to be performed in England (as
Pocahontas; or,
The Indian Princess, at
Drury Lane in 1820). Of Barker's other plays, only three have survived:
Tears and Smiles, a comedy of manners played in Philadelphia in 1807; a dramatization of Scott's
Marmion (1812), which held the stage for many years, being last revived in 1848; and
Superstition (1824), the story of a Puritan refugee from England who leads his village against the Indians.
