Barker, character of the fairground or itinerant theatre company, who stood at the door of the booth and by his vociferous and spellbinding patter induced the audience to enter. He is probably as old as the theatre itself, and was known to the ancient world. He reappeared in 16th-century France and in the later fairs and showgrounds of Europe and America.
