Baker, Josephine [ Freda Josephine McDonald] (1906–75), American music-hall artist, who rivalled the legendary
Mistinguett in popularity. Black, illegitimate, and ill educated, she grew up in poverty, and after two brief marriages—taking her surname from her second husband—she went to Paris in 1925 in an American all-black show. An excellent singer and dancer—revealing almost all her beautiful body—she soon starred at the
Folies-Bergère. Idolized by Parisians of both sexes, she seldom left her adopted city. She retired from the stage several times, but always returned, and died while one of her come-back shows was still running.
