Baddeley, Robert (1732–94), English actor, who was first seen on the stage in 1760 at
Drury Lane, where he created the part of Moses in Sheridan's
The School for Scandal (1777). It was always his most popular role, and he was dressing to play it when he was taken ill and died. He was excellent in such parts as Fluellen in
Henry V and Brainworm in
Jonson's Every Man in His Humour. Having in his youth been a pastrycook, he left a sum of money for a cake and wine to be partaken of by the Drury Lane company on Twelfth Night, a custom which is still observed. He was married briefly and unhappily to the actress
Sophia Snow (1745–86), over whom he fought a duel with the brother of David
Garrick. The daughter of the trumpeter Valentine Snow, she was painted by Zoffany as Fanny in Colman and
Garrick's The Clandestine Marriage.
