Aukin, David

Aukin, David (1942– ), English theatre manager and director, originally a solicitor. He began his theatrical career on the Fringe, being associated with the Joint Stock and Foco Novo companies, both of which he helped to found. From 1970 to 1973 he was literary adviser to the Traverse Theatre. After a year as Administrator at the Oxford Playhouse he moved to the Hampstead Theatre, where he was responsible for some highly successful productions, among them James Saunders's Bodies (1978) and Brian Friel's Translations (1981), which were transferred to London. From 1984 to 1986 he was at the Haymarket Theatre, Leicester, where he launched the revival of the musical Me and My Girl, which became a hit in both London and New York. He was then appointed Executive Director at the National Theatre, remaining there until 1990 and sharing the running of it from 1988 with Richard Eyre.
