Astor Place Opera House

Astor Place Opera House, New York, one block east of Broadway, was built for Italian opera and opened in 1847. In 1848 the English actor Macready appeared there, but owing to the jealousy of Edwin Forrest his visit terminated in 1849 with the anti-British Astor Place riot, in which 22 people were killed and 36 wounded by shots fired by the militia. The theatre then closed for repairs, and reopened in 1849. Actors who came between opera seasons included Charlotte Cushman, Julia Dean, and George Vandenhoff, but the theatre never recovered from its reputation as the ‘Massacre Opera House’ and closed in 1850.
