Asche, Oscar [ John Stanger Heiss] (1871–1936), English actor of Scandinavian descent, born in Australia. He made his first appearance on the stage in 1893, was for a time with
Benson's Shakespeare company, and in 1902 joined Tree's company at
Her (then His) Majesty's Theatre, taking over the management of the theatre in 1907. There he was seen, in his own productions, as Jaques, Othello, Petruchio (one of his best parts), Shylock, Antony in
Antony and Cleopatra, and, in 1911, Falstaff in
The Merry Wives of Windsor. In the same year he made a great success in the part of Hajj in Edward
Knoblock's Kismet. He is, however, chiefly remembered for his own oriental fantasy with music
Chu-Chin-Chow (1916), in which he played Abu Hassan; it ran for five years. Asche's wife, the actress
Lily Brayton (1876–1953), who made her first appearance in 1896 under Benson, played opposite her husband in most of his productions, being seen as Marsinah in
Kismet and Sahrat-al-Kulub in
Chu-Chin-Chow.
