Arts Council of Great Britain, the main channel for the distribution of public money in subsidies to the British theatre and other arts. It is in essence a continuation of the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts (CEMA), founded in 1940 to bring concerts and plays to the crowded evacuation areas, factory canteens, and other commercially unprofitable centres. The Arts Council was created in 1946, receiving all its funds from the Treasury. Of the sum allotted for drama, a large part goes to the National Theatre and the RSC, and a sum is also earmarked for the assistance of touring drama companies. The Arts Council helps to subsidize 12 Regional Arts Associations in England, together with the Scottish and Welsh Arts Councils, that for Northern Ireland being a separate body. These organizations, which receive additional subsidies from sources such as local authorities, give grants to local dramatic organizations, often civic theatres, and co-ordinate theatre activities within their own areas. The subsidies received by the British theatre are tiny compared to those in countries such as Germany and France.
