Arnold, Matthew (1822–88), English poet, educationist, and critic. His poetic plays,
Empedocles on Etna (1852) and
Merope (1858), were for the study rather than the stage; but he did a great service to the theatre by stressing in his essays and lectures its importance as a cultural influence. In ‘The French Play in London’, an essay published in 1882, he wrote: ‘The theatre is irresistible: organize the theatre!’
