Armstrong, William (1882–1952), English actor and director, who was for many years connected with the Liverpool Playhouse where his work was of great value not only to the repertory movement but to the English theatre as a whole, many of his company becoming leading actors in London. He made his first appearance on the stage at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1908, in Frank Benson's Shakespeare company, and after touring extensively was with both the Glasgow and the Birmingham repertory companies. He went to Liverpool in 1922 as manager and director, remaining there until heavy air raids caused the theatre to close in 1941. After several London productions, including Van Druten's Old Acquaintance (1941), he accepted an invitation from Barry Jackson in 1945 to go back to Birmingham, where he remained until his death.
