Arlecchino, one of the comic
zanni or servant roles of the
commedia dell'arte. Wearing a suit patched with scraps of different colours, with a soft cap on his shaven head, he carried a
slapstick, and was above all a dancer and acrobat. His unique blend of stupidity and shrewdness soon singled him out, and he became an important character in many plays. As Arlequin, still a comic servant, the character appears in later French comedy and in the dumb-shows of the
fairs, while, in the familiar form of Harlequin, it passed into the
harlequinade.
