Ansky

Ansky [ Solomon Rappoport] (1863–1920), Jewish ethnologist and man of letters, whose researches into folklore resulted in his one well-known play, The Dybbuk; or Between Two Worlds, a study of demoniac possession and the Hassidic doctrine of preordained relationship. First seen in Yiddish in a production by the Vilna Troupe in 1920, shortly after Ansky's death, it was directed two years later in Hebrew by Vakhtangov for Habimah, which made it world-famous. It was first seen in New York in Hebrew in 1925 and has since been revived several times, in both Hebrew and Yiddish. In London it was first presented in Hebrew in 1930.
