Anderson, Mary (1859–1940), American actress who made her first appearance at the age of 16 at Louisville, playing Shakespeare's Juliet. She toured the United States for some years in a wide variety of parts, being much admired as Julia in Sheridan Knowles's The Hunchback, Pauline in Bulwer-Lytton's The Lady of Lyons, and Parthenia in Mrs Lovell's Ingomar, in which she made her first appearance in London, at the Lyceum in 1883, where in 1887 she played in The Winter's Tale, being the first actress to double the parts of Perdita and Hermione. In 1885 she played Rosalind in As You Like It at Stratford-upon-Avon, one of her best parts. She also appeared in London in several plays by W. S. Gilbert, his Comedy and Tragedy (1884) being specially written for her. She retired in 1889, and was not seen again on the professional stage. In 1890 she married and settled at Broadway in Worcestershire, where she died. She was part-author with Robert Hichens of The Garden of Allah (NY, 1911; London, 1920), a play based on his best-selling novel.
