Allgood, Sara

Allgood, Sara (1883–1950), Irish actress, sister of Maire O'Neill. In 1903 she joined the Irish National Dramatic Society, appearing in the opening productions at the Abbey Theatre in 1904. In 1907 she created the part of Widow Quin in Synge's The Playboy of the Western World. She was for a time a member of Miss Horniman's company at Manchester, but returned to the Abbey in 1920 and played Juno Boyle in Juno and the Paycock (1924), in which she also appeared in London and America, and Bessie Burgess in The Plough and the Stars (1926), both by O'Casey. In London in 1936 she made a great success in Bridie's Storm in a Teacup. She made her last appearance on the stage in New York in 1940, and then appeared only in films.
