bagatelle (Fr., Ger.). Trifle. So a short unpretentious instr. comp., esp. for pf. (Beethoven wrote 26 bagatelles, of which Für Elise is one). Dvořák's Bagatelles Op.47 (1878) are for 2 vn., vc., and harmonium (or pf.).
