Weldon, John (b Chichester, 1676; d London, 1736). Eng. composer and organist. Pupil of Purcell. Org., New Coll., Oxford, 1694, Chapel Royal 1708, St Martin-in-the-Fields 1714. Wrote 4 operas incl. The Judgment of Paris (1701), masque, anthems, songs, and mus. for The Tempest. (Scholars believe that the music for The Tempest usually attrib. Purcell may be by Weldon.)
