Wallenstein, Alfred (b Chicago, 1898; d NY, 1983). Amer. cellist and conductor. Début as cellist, Los Angeles 1912. Later played in S. Francisco SO 1916–17 and Los Angeles PO. Prin. cellist, Chicago SO 1922–9, NYPO 1929–36 (under Toscanini). Became radio cond. Cond. Los Angeles PO 1943–56. Taught at Juilliard Sch. 1968–79.
