Sechter, Simon (b Friedberg, 1788; d Vienna, 1867). Ger.-Bohem. composer, organist, and teacher of theory. Court org., Vienna 1824; prof. of counterpoint, Vienna Cons. 1851–63. Taught Bruckner. Wrote comic opera, str. qts., org. pieces, etc. Schubert, just before his death in 1828, had one lesson from him. Wrote over 8,000 works, incl. 5 operas, 35 Masses, and 2 Requiems.
