Rosenkavalier, Der (The Knight of the Rose). Opera in 3 acts by Richard Strauss, his Op.59, to lib. (comedy for mus.) by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Comp. 1909–10. Prod. Dresden 1911; London and NY Met 1913. Among the famous characters in this opera are the Marschallin (wife of the field-marshal), Oktavian, Sophie, Baron Ochs, and Faninal. For silent film (first shown 1926) with altered plot, much of the mus. of the opera was arr. by others for chamber orch. (1925) as accompaniment. Strauss cond. for the film in Dresden and London but did not use this reduced score, which was not perf. until recorded in 1980.
