Rands, Bernard (b Sheffield, 1935). Eng.-born composer (Amer. cit. 1983). Lived and studied in It., then spent 2 years in Amer. at Princeton and Univ. of Illinois, Urbana. Member of mus. faculty York Univ. 1968–74. Prof. of mus., Univ. of Calif., San Diego, from 1976. Founder-member of mus.-th. ens., C.L.A.P. Worked in EMS in various cities. His mus., avant-garde in style, and sometimes aleatory, is notable for its richly colourful sonorities. Won Pulitzer Prize 1984 with Canti del Sole for ten. and orch. Works incl. mus. theatre, orch. works, and vocal mus. Has also written educational mus.
