Pollini, Maurizio (b Milan, 1942). It. pianist and conductor. Début at age of 9. Won Warsaw Chopin Comp. 1960. After that appeared in Europe and USA as recitalist and concerto soloist, working often with conductor Claudio Abbado. Wide repertory, from Bach to avant-garde works such as Boulez's 2nd sonata. Played complete pf. mus. of Schoenberg and was soloist in f.p. of Nono's Como una ola de fuerza y luz, Milan 1972. Salzburg Fest. début 1973. Like Ashkenazy, Barenboim, Perahia, and others, has often conducted from keyboard. Opera début as cond. Pesaro 1981 in Rossini's La donna del lago after which he regularly cond. Rossini operas.
