‘Philosopher, The’ (Der Philosoph). Nickname of Haydn's Sym. No.22 in E♭ (Hob. I:22) comp. 1764. Known by this title in Haydn's lifetime in reference to opening adagio. Haydn said he had once written a sym. in which God speaks to an unrepentant sinner: this could be the work. A 2nd version, omitting the adagio, was printed in Paris by Venier in 1773.
