Philips, Peter

Philips, Peter (b c.1561; d Brussels, 1628). Eng. composer and organist. Choirboy, St Paul's Cath., London, 1574. First comp., a keyboard pavan, 1580. Fled country 1582 because he was RC. Org., Eng. Coll. in Rome 1582–5. In 1585 entered service of Lord Thomas Paget and travelled to Switz., Sp., and France with him. Settled in Antwerp 1590 as court org. Visited Sweelinck in Amsterdam 1593. Was arrested 1593 and accused of conspiracy to assassinate Elizabeth I, but was exonerated and released. 1st book of madrigals pubd. 1596. Entered service of Archduke in Brussels 1597 as one of 3 organists of vice-regal chapel, a post he held until he died. John Bull visited him in 1613. Comp. motets, madrigals, masses, and psalms, all of high quality and interest.
