Locke, Matthew [ Matthew Lock] (b Exeter, c.1622; d London, 1677). Eng. composer, especially of theatre music. Convert to Catholicism c.1650. Composer-in-ordinary to Charles II, 1661. Wrote incidental mus. for Shadwell's and Davenant's versions of Shakespeare plays (e.g. Macbeth and The Tempest), many anthems, 6 suites (some for recorder), Music for his Majesty's Sackbuts and Cornetts, Melothesia (studies for continuo, 1673). Also wrote pamphlets defending his style.
