Lablache, Luigi

Lablache, Luigi (b Naples, 1794; d Naples, 1858). It. bass of Fr. and Irish parentage. Début Naples 1812 in Fioravanti's La molinara. La Scala début 1817. Stayed for six seasons. Int. career followed (in Vienna he sang in Mozart's Requiem at Beethoven's funeral, 1827). London début 1830. Became great favourite in Paris and London 1830–56. Created Sir George Walton in I Puritani (Paris 1835), title-role in Don Pasquale (Paris 1843), and Massimiliano in I Masnadieri (London 1847). St Petersburg 1852. Famous Bartolo and Leporello. V. had compass of 3 octaves. Taught Queen Victoria singing. Retired 1856.
