Prof. of mus., Univ. of Calif. 1964, Yale Univ. 1940–76 (prof. from 1965). Biography of Domenico Scarlatti (1953) incorporated catalogue of his works which has been accepted as definitive, works being given ‘K’ nos. Ed. of over 60 Scarlatti sonatas, J. S. Bach's ‘Goldberg’ Variations, etc.
