Friedrich, Götz

Friedrich, Götz (b Naumburg, 1930; d Berlin, 2000). Ger. opera producer. Studied in Weimar and joined Felsenstein at the Komische Oper, Berlin, 1953. First prod. Così fan tutte 1958, dir. of prods. 1968. Chief prod. Hamburg 1973–81. First Bayreuth prod. 1972 (Tannhäuser). Prin. prod. CG 1976–81 and among his prods. there has staged The Ring (1974–6 and 1989–91). Prod. f.p. Berio's Un Re in Ascolto (his Salzburg Fest. début, 1984), Rihm's Oedipus, Berlin 1987. USA début prod. Wozzeck (Houston 1982). An avowed Marxist, his political leanings are reflected in his prods. Intendant, Deutsche Oper, Berlin, from 1980. Married to soprano Karan Armstrong (b 1941).
