Carvalho, Eleazar de (b Iguatu, Ceará, Brazil, 1912; d São Paulo, 1996). Brazilian conductor and composer. Tubaplayer 1930–40 in orch. of Teatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro. Cond., Brazilian SO, from 1941. Went to USA 1946, studying with Koussevitzky. Guest cond. leading Amer. orchs. Cond., St Louis SO 1963–8. Returned to Brazil 1971. Taught at Juilliard Sch. 1983. Works incl. operas, symphonic poems, and chamber mus.
