Barnby, (Sir) Joseph (b York, 1838; d London, 1896). Eng. organist, conductor, and composer. His finest service to mus. was during his period as organist at St Anne's, Soho, 1863–71, when he gave yearly perfs. of Bach's St John Passion. Cond. f.ps. in England of Dvořák's Stabat Mater (1883) and Wagner's Parsifal (in concert version, 1884). Precentor, Eton College, 1875. Prin., GSMD, 1892–6. Knighted 1892. Among his many comps., sacred and secular, the chief survivor has been the part-song Sweet and Low.
