tarbh uisge

tarbh uisge [ScG, water-bull]. Malevolent bull of Scottish Gaelic tradition that emerges from the sea by moonlight to terrorize the countryside. A huge black monster, its head is as black as a thunder cloud, its nostrils redder than lightning, and its great bull neck breaks the waves. Calves born with split ears have been fathered by the tarbh uisge and so should be killed at birth before they bring disaster to the herd. See also TARROO USHTEY.
