Étaín Óg

Étaín Óg, Óig. Daughter of Étaín(1), with whom she is often confused. In Togail Bruidne Da Derga[The Destruction of Da Derga's Hostel], Étaín (1) mates with Eochaid Feidlech to produce Étaín Óg, who marries Cormac (1), king of Ulster. Some commentators think this Cormac identical with Cormac Connloinges, who, in genealogical tracts, is thought married to Étaín (1). Cormac is disappointed that Étaín Óg bears him only one child, a daughter. Jealous and fearful, Étaín Óg demands that Cormac's retainers murder another daughter from a previous marriage. Charmed by the baby's laughter, the retainers refuse, leaving her instead in a cowshed. Upon maturity this child is named Mes Buachalla[herdsman's fosterling], wife of Eterscél and mother of Conaire Mór. The name Étaín Óg should not apply to the other ‘daughters’ of Étaín (1) cited in Tochmarc Étaíne[The Wooing of Étaín]. Distinguish from Ésa, yet another daughter of Étaín (1).
