Áed Ruad, Ruadh [Ir., red Áed]. Father of Macha (2), who founded Emain Macha. According to the annals, he once ruled Ireland for a seven-year term as third of a twenty-one-year sequence with his kinsmen (sometimes brothers, sometimes cousins) Cimbáeth and Díthorba. Seven magicians, seven poets, and seven lords of Ulster guaranteed that the agreement would be kept. When Áed Ruad drowned in the waterfall named for him, Assaroe [Eas Ruaidh], his daughter Macha was elected to rule in his place. At first Cimbáeth and Díthorba opposed her; she made peace with Cimbáeth and married him but killed Díthorba.
