ealu]. A favourite drink of the ancient Celts was fermented malt with hops, what we call ale when it has a heavier body than the Teutonic beer. Malaliach (or Samaliliath) the
Partholonian introduced ale-drinking into Ireland, and the ale of
Goibniu confers immortality on the drinker; Angus Óg drinks it.
Fand entertains
Cúchulainn with a bottomless vat of ale.
Conn Cétchathach [of the Hundred Battles] drank
dergfhlaith, the red ale or red sovereignty, as he had been bidden to by the goddess of
