Vitiris

Vitiris, Veteris, Vitris. Latin name for a British god of Roman Britain whose worship was popular among men, especially soldiers of the occupation army, even though his name does not appear to be derived from any god of Roman or Greek origin. Inscriptions of his name, found most frequently in north Britain, include a variety of spellings: Vitiris, Veterus, Vitris, Vetus, and Hvitiris. As his name is usually invoked in the plural, he may have taken tripartite form (see TRIPLISM). More than forty altars dedicated to Vitiris survive, many of them in Northumberland, some decorated with a serpent and a boar. He may have been the north British horned god.
