Tuathmhumhain]. Anglicized name for North
Munster, the petty kingdom of the O'Briens, which separated from the rest of Munster in the 12th century. From shortly after the conquest, 1169, until the reign of James I (1603–25) Thomond was considered a part of
Connacht. With the shiring of Ireland in the 17th century, most of Thomond became Co. Clare, but historically the name also refers to portions of adjacent counties Limerick and Tipperary.
