Tadg, Tadc, Tadhg [Ir., poet]. One of the commonest man's names in Irish, so that the phrase tadhg na sráide [Tadg on the street] is the equivalent of the English ‘man on the street’. Thady is a common but now archaic transliteration. Spuriously anglicized as Timothy, Thaddeus, and Theophilus. The forms Teague and Taigue imply opprobrium for Catholics in Northern Ireland. The most often cited Tadg from early literature is Tadg mac Nuadat, grandfather of Fionn mac Cumhaill.
