Morfran, Morvran [W, great crow; sea crow]. Hideously ugly son of Tegid Foel and the goddess Ceridwen, to whom she hoped to give the power of poetic inspiration. Her servant Gwion Bach, later to become Taliesin, receives it instead. He may also be known as Y Fagddu or Afagddu [utter darkness]. Morfran is also a warrior in Welsh Arthuriana; no one would strike him in battle because his ugliness made opponents fear he might be the devil.
