Mes Buachalla, Mess Buachalla, Mess buachalla [Ir., cowherd's fosterling]. Young woman, often portrayed as a foundling, whose ancestry is presented differently in different early Irish texts. In Togail Bruidne Da Derga [The Destruction of Da Derga's Hostel] she is named as the daughter of Cormac and a woman who came in the form of a bird; her stepmother, Étaín Óg, wants her killed but is subsequently charmed by her. In Tochmarc Étaíne [The Wooing of Étaín], the action of which precedes Togail Bruidne Da Derga, her name does not appear, but she is implicitly the incestuously begotten daughter of Eochaid Feidlech and his daughter, Étaín Óg; before the action is completed she marries Eterscél and gives birth to Conaire Mór. Outside these two texts, Eochaid Airem and Étaín (1) produce Ésa, who becomes the mother of Mes Buachalla.
