Finnabair, Finnabhair, Finnabher, Findabair, Fionnabhair, Fionnúir [Ir., fair eyebrows]. Beautiful daughter of Queen
Medb and her husband
Ailill mac Máta, sister of Faife. She was in love with the hero
Fráech, who would not pay her dowry. Ailill also feared that an alliance with Fráech would raise the enmity of rival kings. Without telling her daughter, Medb offered Finnabair's favours to many champions in the contest with
Ulster, as recounted in
Táin Bó Cuailnge [Cattle Raid of Cooley].
Ferdiad accepted the challenge but was killed in combat with
Cúchulainn. Later Fráech took on the invincible Cúchulainn and was killed, causing Finnabair to die of a broken heart. The etymology of the name Finnabair links it with the Welsh
Gwenhwyfar, the Arthurian
Guinevere, and the Anglo-Cornish Jennifer. Sometimes confused with
Lendabair, wife of
Conall Cernach.
