Fergus Fínbél, Fergus Fionbhéil, Fergus Finvel [Ir., wine mouth; fair mouth]. A poet, diplomat, and peacemaker, the best-known of the ten members of
Fionn mac Cumhaill's Fianna named Fergus. He is sometimes thought to be Fionn's son. A constant companion, Fergus Fínbél was usually seen as Fionn's wisest counsellor and interpreter of dreams, and a favoured carrier of important messages. He was an admired maker of verses, i.e. poet, but not a
bard, and sings the war-ode
Rosg Catha for
Oscar at the end of
Cath Gabhra [The Battle of Gabhair/ Gowra]. He was once saved from an enchanted cave by
Goll mac Morna.
