Essé. Village in Brittany, 17 miles SE of Rennes, best known for the nearby impressive megalithic dolmens (or portal tombs) known locally as La Roche aux Fées[Fairies Rock]. Long thought one of the finest megalithic monuments in any Celtic country, the dolmen at Essé is composed of forty-two stones, of which six weigh between forty and forty-five tons each. A massive portico leads to a low ceilinged corridor, which opens on to a large, high compartmented room. In popular etymology the town is thought to have been named for Esus, the Gaulish god.
