Eochu mac Maireda

Eochu mac Maireda, Eochu Maireadha; also known as Ecca. Divine figure from pre-Christian Ireland euhemerized into a mortal. His pedigree cites Mairid mac Caireda, an unmistakably divine figure; his stepmother is Ébliu(2); his brother Rib. Eochu is best known for giving his name to Lough Neagh, or, in Irish, Lough nEchach. He was probably the ruler of the Otherworld under the Lough. In Christian times, Eochu was portrayed in an invented legend as an unfortunate drowned by the expanding waters; fishermen were thought to be able to see his residence from the middle of the waters during calm weather.
