Doire [OIr., oak grove]. Name given to many places on the early Irish map, the most famous of which is the monastic settlement reputedly established on the west banks of the River Foyle by St Colum Cille after 544. The settlement was sometimes called Doire Choluim Chille in his honour as well as to erase its previous pagan associations, when the site was known as Doire Calgaich [Calgach's Oak Grove]. Doire is coextensive with the modern industrial city, the fourth largest in Ireland, of Derry, or, as the British have called it since the reign of James I, Londonderry.
