Corrievreckan

Corrievreckan, Corry Vreckan [Ir. and ScG coire brecáin, cauldron of Brecáin (personal name)]. Name given to two whirlpools, the more celebrated of which is between the islands of Jura and Scarba in the Inner Hebrides; the second is between Rathlin Island and the mainland of north Northern Ireland. The Scottish Corrievreckan is named for Brecáin, Brecon, or Brechin, a hero described in the Book of Ballymote as having perished here with fifty ships. Both are known popularly as ‘the cauldron of the old woman’, a possible association with Mórrígan.
