Cináed, Cináeth, Cionaodh. A name borne by several figures in early Irish and Scottish Gaelic chronicle, of whom the best-known is certainly Cináed mac Alpín of
Dál Riada. According to chronicle, Cináed mac Alpín was the first king of Scotland, ruling from 844 until his death in 858. Cináed united the Scoto-Irish invaders in
Argyll (since 1974, Strathclyde), from his father's family, with the native
Picts, from his mother's family. His name is often anglicized Kenneth MacAlpin, and he is sometimes rather grandly called Kenneth I.
