Carrigcleena, Carrig-Cleena [Ir. carraig Chlíodhna, Clídna's rock]. Name given to two large rocks thought to be sacred to Clídna. The better-known of the two, 7 miles SSW of Mallow, Co. Cork, was once thought to be a door to the Otherworld. In peasant belief still current in the late 19th century, Clídna was thought to reside in a greensward in a circle of rocks; her benevolence would spare the area from blighted crops, diseased cattle, mischievous spirits, etc. The second Carrigcleena, also associated with Clídna, is off Inch Strand, 2 miles SE of Ross Carbery, Co. Cork.
