Callernish

Callernish, Callanish. Archaeological site on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, containing one of the best-preserved dolmens or ‘druidical circles’ to be found any where in Europe. It lies 16 miles W of Stornoway on the east coast of the island. In folk tradition the stones are thought to move and change their places when humans are not watching. They are referred to in Lewis Gaelic as Tarsachan Chalanais [the giants of Callanish], using a Norse word for ‘giant’.
