Branwen [W bran, raven, dark; (g)wen, fair, beauty; i.e. white or sacred raven]. Title character of Branwen, the second branch of the Mabinogi. The daughter of Lly̌r, Branwen is given in marriage to Matholwch, king of Ireland, by her brother Bendigeidfran. After an insult to the Irishmen by a half-brother, Efnisien, Branwen is made to suffer at the hands of her husband's countrymen. Bendigeidfran, learning of this, makes war on Ireland and is killed. Branwen dies of sorrow. Branwen has been compared with Rhiannon, as she is a giver of bracelets. Her name is confused with, but should be distinguished from, Bronwen [W bron, breast; (g)wen, fair]. She seems to be related to the Arthurian figures Brangwaine, Brangoene, Bringvain.
