Beli, Beli Mawr [W, big, bright; Beli the great]. An ancestor deity who established several royal lines in Wales. Although he is probably an adaptation of the earlier deity Belenus, he has sometimes been identified with the shadowy historical figure Beli ab Elfin/Elffin (d. 721). Beli Mawr is mentioned several times in the Mabinogi and is cited as the husband of Dôn and father of Arianrhod and Caswallan. In Cyfranc Lludd a Llefelys his sons are named as Lludd and Llefelys. The Arthurian figure Pelle appears to have borrowed much from Beli Mawr. See Rachel Bromwich, Trioedd Ynys Prydain, 2nd edn. (Cardiff, 1978), 281, 545. See also BILE.
