Ailbe, Saint

Ailbe, Saint. Patron of the church of Emly, Co. Tipperary. His death date is either AD 526, 531, or 541. According to tradition he was suckled by a wolf and acknowledged all his days a ‘kinship with the milk’. Although modern commentators admit that his life is a ‘confusion of vague legends’, he retains his place in the calendar of saints, 12 September. He may be identical with the St Ailbe visited by St Brendan in the Navigatio.
